How Early Should You Arrive at Bali Airport Before Your Flight?

For an international flight from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, reaching the terminal 3 hours before departure is the safe number; for a domestic flight, 2 hours. The reason: several international airlines close their check-in counters exactly 60 minutes before departure, and after the counter you still face immigration and security. These 3- and 2-hour figures are practical advice, not a written rule. When we checked in October 2026, we found no official InJourney (Angkasa Pura) notice setting a fixed arrival time for Ngurah Rai. What actually binds you is your airline's counter cut-off.

Counter cut-offs we checked

From each airline's official website, checked October 2026:

  • Singapore Airlines from Denpasar (DPS): counters open 3 hours and close 1 hour before scheduled departure.
  • Virgin Australia from Denpasar: counters open 2.5 hours before departure and close 60 minutes before. The airline recommends having bags dropped at least 90 minutes before departure, or 120 minutes for groups.
  • Qantas international flights (QF1-QF399): check-in closes 60 minutes before departure, and the same applies to Qantas-coded flights operated by Jetstar. Qantas international counters generally open 3 hours ahead.
  • Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air, AirAsia: we could not open their official cut-off pages, or they gave no airport-specific figures, at the time of checking. Don't rely on numbers from blogs; use the deadline printed on your e-ticket or in the airline app.

Often missed: the counter cut-off also applies if you checked in online but still have a bag to drop. A boarding pass on your phone won't help a suitcase that arrives late at the counter.

After the counter: immigration, screening, gate

  • New order in the international terminal. Since 12 June 2025, according to IDN Times reporting on the change by PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia, bag screening no longer happens at the international terminal entrance but after passport control. You can walk straight to check-in, but the screening queue now sits beyond immigration.
  • Departure immigration. Eligible passport holders can use the autogates; the rules are in our article on who can use the immigration autogates at Bali airport. If you travel with children or your passport won't read at the machine, allow extra time for the manual desks.
  • Gate. Boarding gates usually close 15-20 minutes before departure. The exact time is on your boarding pass.

Getting to the airport: where plans usually fail

People miss flights because of the road far more often than because of queues inside. The ranges below run from light to heavy traffic; on the day, check Google Maps with a set departure time.

  • From Ubud (about 35-40 km): 1-1.5 hours in light traffic, more than 2 hours if you cross Denpasar at evening rush hour.
  • From Canggu: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. The slow points are the Canggu-Kerobokan roads and Sunset Road towards the Dewa Ruci junction.
  • From Uluwatu: 40 minutes to 1 hour via Jl. Raya Uluwatu and the Ngurah Rai Bypass at Jimbaran. From Nusa Dua or Sanur, the Bali Mandara toll road skips the Bypass junctions and is usually the most predictable route.

The Dewa Ruci junction, where the Ngurah Rai Bypass underpass meets Sunset Road and Jl. Raya Kuta, is the main bottleneck from the north. It is typically busiest in the morning commute and in the late afternoon, around 16:00-19:00; other stretches to avoid are covered in our piece on Bali traffic jam hours. Heavy afternoon rain, temple ceremonies that close village roads, and the car queue at the terminal drop-off lane can add 15-30 minutes that don't show on the map.

Peak season: add an hour

Christmas and New Year is the busiest period. For the 2025/2026 holiday season, InJourney projected Ngurah Rai would handle about 1.36 million air passengers (reported by Bisnis.com, 19 December 2025). During this period, and during the July-August school holidays and long weekends, add an hour: 4 hours for international and 3 for domestic. Also remember the airport shuts for 24 hours on Nyepi, so don't book a flight on that day.

Working out when to leave your hotel

  • International, normal day: reach the terminal 3 hours before departure.
  • Domestic, normal day: 2 hours.
  • Christmas-New Year, school holidays, long weekends: add 1 hour.
  • Hotel departure time = terminal arrival time minus the worst-case drive, not the average.

Example: an international flight at 18:00 and you are staying in Ubud. Aim to reach the terminal by 15:00, and because roads towards the airport fill up in the afternoon, leave Ubud no later than 13:00. The 3-hour rule has one weak spot, early-morning flights: some airlines only open counters 2.5-3 hours before departure, so arriving much earlier just means waiting in front of a closed desk.
