Flying a Bike to Bali: Bicycle Baggage Fees by Airline

Flying a bicycle to Bali can cost nothing or more than IDR1 million each way. Three things decide it: whether the airline counts the bike as normal checked baggage, whether there is a special handling fee, and how much the bike weighs once boxed. Every figure below comes from the airlines' own pages and was checked in October 2026.

Airline by airline

  • Garuda Indonesia. For tickets issued from 1 September 2026, Garuda uses a piece concept: international economy gets 2 bags of up to 23 kg each, domestic economy 1 bag of 23 kg. Garuda's older baggage page gave one free piece of sports equipment on top of the allowance, with bicycles up to 30 kg in a 177 x 23 x 102 cm box, and bikes over 32 kg going by cargo. Garuda has not publicly said whether that free sports item survives under the new system, so get written confirmation from the call centre before you buy.
  • Batik Air. Bikes are special baggage: 30 kg maximum per piece, a Special Baggage form, and a handling fee per piece per sector. Bought in Indonesia it is IDR200,000, in Australia AUD20, in Singapore SGD20. A 165 x 23 x 102 cm cardboard box is the only packing it considers suitable. Bikes wrapped only in plastic are still accepted but get a Limited Release tag, meaning damage is at your risk. Batik Air's price list dated 15 July 2026 states that prepaid baggage does not cover the bicycle and surfboard handling fee. Excess baggage on Jakarta-Denpasar is IDR68,000/kg at the airport or IDR47,000/kg prepaid.
  • Lion Air. Same group and same price document as Batik Air, but the cheapest Lion Air fares include no free checked baggage. You buy the bike's weight as prepaid baggage plus the handling fee. We found no Lion Air page giving a separate bicycle handling figure, so ask when booking.
  • AirAsia (Indonesia AirAsia, code QZ). Bikes fall under Sport Equipment, priced per passenger per sector. The official table dated 14 September 2026 for international routes: 20 kg AUD48, 25 kg AUD64, 30 kg AUD82, 40 kg AUD124 if bought at initial booking, more afterwards (AUD53 to AUD136). In rupiah it starts at IDR645,000 for 20 kg. QZ domestic routes start at IDR259,000 for 15 kg. AirAsia's free 15 kg surfboard scheme does not cover bikes.
  • Jetstar. Any item with one side over 1 metre, packaging included, pays an oversized item fee of AUD25 per item per flight. The fee adds no weight, so the bike still has to fit inside the baggage you bought. Two oversized items maximum, 2.3 m maximum length (2.77 m on international Boeing 787 flights).
  • Qantas. Bikes must be in a bike box. Your own box can be up to 140 x 30 x 80 cm, or buy one at most Qantas terminals in Australia. Deflate tyres, remove pedals, turn the handlebars parallel to the frame. The bike counts toward your normal allowance, with 32 kg maximum per piece. CO2 tyre cartridges need dangerous goods approval.
  • Virgin Australia. Bikes go in a hard or soft bike box with pedals off and tyres deflated, checked in at least one hour before departure. They count toward your allowance, and overweight fees apply. E-bike batteries are capped at 160Wh, and removed batteries go in carry-on.
  • Singapore Airlines. The bike counts toward your checked allowance and the oversize fee does not apply to bicycles. Packing must be a hard case, cardboard or a padded bag. Plastic bags or unpadded soft cases are refused. 32 kg per piece maximum, and e-bikes are not carried on passenger flights.

What pushes the cost up

A cardboard bike box often weighs 7-10 kg on its own. An 8 kg road bike can become 18-20 kg once packed with helmet, shoes and pump. Work from the packed weight, not the catalogue weight.

Per-sector pricing is easy to miss. Perth-Jakarta-Denpasar on AirAsia or Batik Air counts as two sectors, so the handling fee is paid twice. A direct flight to Denpasar is almost always cheaper with a bike.

If the bike arrives damaged, report it before leaving the baggage hall. The steps are in our article on claiming lost or damaged baggage in Bali. A Batik Air Limited Release tag usually sinks a claim, so use a box where you can.

Bring your own or rent in Bali?

Road bike and MTB rentals exist in Ubud, Sanur and Canggu. Most ask for a deposit, which can run to several million rupiah for carbon frames, and daily rates are often not published online. Ask for a written price and frame size before you go. For one or two rides, renting is usually cheaper than return baggage fees. For a two-week training block on your own setup, bringing the bike makes more sense.

The climbs bike travellers ask about most, such as Kintamani and Jatiluwih, are covered in our Bali cycling guide. Surfers face different rules, see surfboard baggage fees to Bali.

One weakness in this data: Batik Air's bicycle help page dates from April 2024, and Garuda has not detailed sports equipment under the piece concept. Screenshot the airline's rules when you buy, because check-in staff sometimes read them differently.
