Goa Raja Waterfall or Tukad Cepung? A Bangli Comparison

Goa Raja Waterfall in Jehem village, Tembuku district, is only about 4.5 km from Tukad Cepung, and both are waterfalls tucked behind canyon walls. The differences are in the trail, the crowds and how natural each one feels. The Jehem tourism village website lists entry at Rp25,000, while a guide updated in 2026 recorded Rp30,000. Budget Rp25-30k per person in cash (checked September 2026).

• Crowds: Goa Raja is usually quieter. At Tukad Cepung people often queue for a photo under the light beams.

Goa Raja's downsides that rarely get mentioned

Goa Raja has been fairly heavily landscaped. There are man-made pools opposite the falls, and one English-language guide said it feels more like a swimming pool than a wild waterfall. If you want a raw canyon with no concrete, it may disappoint. The path is slippery even in the dry season and the base turns muddy after rain. In the wet season the flow is strong and murky and swimming is not advisable. There is no ATM nearby.

On the other hand, that landscaping is exactly what makes Goa Raja easier for families. The pool is shallow, there are changing rooms, and you do not have to cross a river.

When Tukad Cepung is the better call

If your reason for coming to Bangli is that famous light-beam photo, Goa Raja cannot replace it. The beams at Tukad Cepung are clearest around 11:00-14:00 in the dry season. Outside those hours the canyon is fairly dim, which also means those hours are the busiest. Tukad Cepung is a poor fit if you do not want wet feet, because you will almost certainly be wading, and if you have no patience for waiting your turn for a photo.

So which one?

• Choose Goa Raja if you have children who can walk on their own, want a calm soak, or care about proper toilets and changing rooms.
• Choose Tukad Cepung if photos are the point, you are happy to get wet, and you can arrive during the light-beam window.
• Do both with half a day: Tukad Cepung during the light-beam hours, then Goa Raja around midday or in the afternoon, about 15 minutes' drive away. From Ubud, Goa Raja is roughly 25 km or 45-60 minutes.
• Want somewhere quieter still? Jehem also has Yeh Bulan Waterfall in Banjar Jehem Kelod, opened in November 2023 (Rp10k for Indonesians, Rp20k for foreigners per the village site), or carry on to Tibumana in southern Bangli.

• Bring: sport sandals or water shoes, a change of clothes and enough cash.

One last note: on Google Maps the place sometimes appears as "Goa Rajo Waterfall". Both names refer to the same falls in Jehem.
