If you want serious Indonesian food in Canggu — not the softened tourist version — Ulekan Bali in Berawa is the address. The name comes from the ulekan, the stone pestle used to pound spices, and that is the heart of the kitchen: the full Balinese spice base is ground first, then cooked over wood and charcoal.
Open Fire Kitchen, Hand-Ground Spices
The dining room is open-sided, with carved wood accents, low lighting and honest smoke drifting off the grill. The menu is built for sharing: order a few dishes, one rice, and split them. Portions are generous, so two people do fine with two mains plus a vegetable.
Dishes Worth Ordering
- Bebek Betutu — duck slow-cooked in a full Balinese spice paste until it falls off the bone.
- Ayam Betutu — the chicken version, fire-roasted and served with sambal.
- Sate Lilit — minced fish satay wrapped around lemongrass stalks, deeply smoky.
- Sate Babi Samcan — grilled pork belly satay that melts, a longtime favourite.
- Beef Rendang — dark and rich with toasted coconut, good for chilli lovers.
Atmosphere, Best Time and Parking
Arrive as the sun drops, around 6pm, to catch the lamps coming on without a long wait. Ulekan Berawa also stages Balinese dance on Wednesday and Friday evenings in two sets — the busiest and most memorable time to be there. Booking is strongly advised for weekends and performance nights; lunch is usually relaxed enough to walk in. Scooter parking out front is easy, but drivers should follow the attendants, as Jalan Pantai Berawa gets congested at peak hours.
