From the surface, Secret Bay in Gilimanuk looks like nothing more than a shallow, muddy bay at Bali's far western tip, minutes from the ferry terminal to Java. Underwater it is one of the most famous muck diving sites on the planet: not a colourful coral garden, but a hunt for strange, finger-sized creatures.
Why Secret Bay Is Special
The muddy bottom, dark sand and scattered leaves are exactly what makes it a perfect hiding place for macro life.
- Frogfish in many colours, often clinging to sponges or organic debris.
- Ghost pipefish and seahorses camouflaged among the seagrass.
- Mandarinfish and other dragonets, active as dusk approaches.
- Nudibranchs, snake eels, cockatoo waspfish and juvenile batfish.
Conditions: Shallow, Cold, Silty
- Depth is usually only 3–8 metres, so bottom times are long.
- The water is cold, around 22–26 degrees Celsius, far cooler than eastern Bali.
- Visibility is limited and drops fast once the bottom is stirred up.
- This is not a scenic reef site; the value lies in macro subjects.
- Best season: the dry months, roughly April to October.
Access and Preparation
- From Denpasar or Kuta expect 3.5–4 hours of driving along the western route.
- From Pemuteran or Menjangan it is only 1–1.5 hours, a far more practical base.
- You must dive with a licensed dive operator, PADI or SSI, that knows the bay's currents.
- Bring a thick hooded wetsuit, a focus light and a macro camera.
Etiquette on a Muddy Bottom
The key is buoyancy control. Stay horizontal, avoid kicks that stir up silt, never move animals for a photo, and limit strobe bursts. One careless diver can ruin visibility for the whole group.
