About 15 km northeast of Ubud, in Manukaya Village, Tampaksiring, stands Tirta Empul Temple — one of Bali's most revered temples. Built around 962 AD, it is famous for its spring water, considered holy and used by Balinese Hindus for melukat, a ritual of spiritual self-cleansing. Clear water flows from a natural source into stone bathing pools, then on to the Pakerisan River.
How Melukat Works
Melukat is performed in the purification pools (petirtaan), which have over a dozen water spouts. Before entering, prepare a small offering (canang) and pray at the first spout. Then wash your face and head at each spout in order, from left to right.
- Skip the marked spouts reserved for death ceremonies (ngaben) — not for general cleansing.
- Women who are menstruating are not permitted in the temple area or pools.
- Bring a change of clothes and a towel; carry a bag for wet items.
Etiquette & Sarong Rules
This is an active place of worship, not a tourist pool. Wear a sarong and sash (provided free at the entrance). To enter the pools, use a special green or purple melukat sarong, rentable on site for about Rp10,000–20,000. Dress modestly, keep your voice down, and do not photograph people praying without permission.
Tickets & Best Time
No official 2025-2026 rate has been published. The last figures, in Gianyar bylaw 5/2021, are Rp50,000 per adult and Rp25,000 per child for foreign visitors and Rp30,000 and Rp15,000 for Indonesians, while Hindus coming to pray pay nothing. Parking is separate, and the price board at the counter is what counts (checked 21 October 2026). Arrive at opening, 8:00–9:00 am, to avoid large groups and enjoy clearer water. Avoid full-moon and new-moon days if you want quiet, as worshippers come in large numbers.
