At the eastern end of Padangbai, a climbing lane leads to the rocky hill where Pura Silayukti faces the sea. This Dang Kahyangan temple is believed to be the meditation place of Mpu Kuturan, the 11th-century priest who shaped the Kahyangan Tiga concept — the three main temples that every Balinese traditional village still maintains today.
Traces of Mpu Kuturan
The complex is divided into three courtyards: jaba pura, jaba tengah and jeroan, with plain stone shrines among old trees. The mood is hushed, far from the busy harbour only a few hundred metres below.
- Mpu Kuturan is credited with uniting rival sects and ordering the religious life of ancient Bali.
- Local tradition names this temple as the place of his moksa, his release from the physical world.
- The piodalan anniversary follows the Balinese calendar, when the temple fills with worshippers in ceremonial dress.
Views over the Lombok Strait
From the terrace, Padangbai bay opens up: ferries bound for Lombok, brightly painted fishing boats and the line of the Lombok Strait beyond. The ridge path also leads towards Blue Lagoon, while Pantai Bias Tugel lies on the other side of the bay — both are easy to combine in one morning.
Best time and photo tips
- Mornings are most comfortable: cool air and light falling towards the harbour.
- Late afternoon gives warm colour to the stone walls and the sea.
- Rubber-soled shoes help on the steep lane, which gets slippery after rain.
