Of the six Pura Sad Kahyangan that anchor Bali's spiritual map, Pura Masceti is probably the one that rarely makes a tourist itinerary. It sits in Medahan village, Blahbatuh district, Gianyar, right at the edge of a black-sand beach. There is no ticket booth and no souvenir row — only the sound of surf, incense smoke, and worshippers who come to pray or perform melukat.
The Temple That Guards the Rice Fields
Local purana texts say the temple was completed in the era of Mpu Kuturan, around the 11th century. It is cared for by dozens of subak (irrigation cooperatives) from nearby villages such as Medahan, Keramas and Cucukan, and farmers come to ask protection for their fields against pests and disease. That is why the place feels working and alive rather than staged.
- Status: one of Bali's Pura Sad Kahyangan Jagat
- The beach: volcanic black sand with heavy surf — for looking at, not for swimming
- Rituals: melukat and ceremonies are often held right on the sand
Best Time and Visitor Etiquette
Come at dawn until about 8am for sunrise over the sea, or between 4pm and 6pm when the light softens and the sea breeze cools everything down.
- Wear a kamen (sarong) and sash; bring your own, as rentals are not always available
- Do not enter the jeroan (inner courtyard) unless you are there to pray, especially during a ceremony
- Following Balinese custom, women who are menstruating do not enter the temple grounds
- Ask permission before photographing anyone praying or performing melukat
Getting There and Facilities
Roughly 40–50 minutes from Ubud via Blahbatuh, or 30–40 minutes from Sanur along the east coast. The final stretch narrows between rice paddies, so a scooter or small car is more comfortable. Parking sits near the temple for a small fee, and a few simple warung sell coffee, young coconut and nasi campur.
