On the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem stands one of Bali’s most viral photo icons: the Gates of Heaven. Two candi bentar (split gates) at Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang perfectly frame the silhouette of Mount Agung, creating the symmetrical composition sought by thousands of visitors. The site is part of the sacred Pura Lempuyang Luhur complex, one of Bali’s oldest and most revered temples.
The Photo Queue-Number System
Because of its popularity, the photo between the two gates is managed with a queue-number system. On arrival you register and receive a number, then wait to be called. On busy days the queue can reach 2–3 hours. A local photographer helps take the shot — the famous ‘water mirror’ effect is actually a reflection from a small piece of glass held under the phone lens, not a real pool. A voluntary tip for the photographer is customary.
Arriving Early Is Key
To avoid the long queue and the mist that often hides Mount Agung by midday, arrive before 7 a.m. Mornings give the clearest skies, cool temperatures, and the best chance of seeing the peak cloud-free. Skip weekends and holiday peaks if you want it calmer.
