Pura Gunung Kawi in Tampaksiring is one of Bali's most important ancient sites. At the bottom of the Pakerisan River valley stand ten shrines (tomb reliefs) about 7 meters tall, carved directly into the rock cliff in the 11th century, believed to honor King Anak Wungsu of the Warmadewa Dynasty and his family. This is Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring — the ancient tomb-shrine complex, distinct from Gunung Kawi Sebatu, which is a water-spring temple.
The Descent into the Valley
To reach the shrines, visitors descend about 300 stone steps that wind through lush green terraced rice fields. At the valley floor, the Pakerisan River flows between the shrines, creating a cool, calm atmosphere. The shrines are split into groups on both sides of the river, connected by a small bridge and stone paths.
- Ten giant shrines carved into the cliff — the main icon of the site.
- Terraced rice fields along the descent, a classic Ubud landscape.
- The Pakerisan River, considered sacred, flowing through the middle of the complex.
- Hermitage niches and ancient bathing pools in the surrounding area.
