Few places to eat in Kuta can claim the same age as Poppies Restaurant. It opened in January 1973 on a sandy track leading to the beach, and it was the restaurant that gave the area's most iconic laneway its name: Poppies Lane I. More than five decades later, its garden is still a shaded oasis in the middle of busy Kuta.
Stone Gardens, a Small Pond and Tables Under the Leaves
Step through the gate and the sound of scooters in the lane fades away. Poppies is laid out as a terraced tropical garden: carved statues and paras stone walls, a small fish pond, dense planting and separate tables tucked between the foliage. At night, candles and soft lamps make it one of the most romantic choices in Kuta — ideal for dinner for two or a small celebration without driving up to Seminyak.
The Menu: Indonesia Meets Western Classics
The kitchen deliberately ignores trends; many recipes have survived since the first decade. What guests usually come for:
- Indonesian classics: nasi goreng, satay, gado-gado and the home-made tomato soup that has been on the menu since 1973.
- Seafood: prawns, squid and fresh fish, grilled or lightly battered.
- Steaks & grills: including chateaubriand for two, one of the restaurant's signatures.
- Desserts & cocktails: ice creams, pies and a classic tropical drinks list.
Mains run roughly IDR 90,000–250,000 depending on whether you order nasi goreng or a premium cut — still reasonable for this kind of setting.
