If you picture hiking in Bali as a bare sand slope with sunrise above the clouds, Mount Batukaru will surprise you. This 2,276-metre summit in Tabanan is Bali's second-highest mountain, but the trail is almost entirely covered by thick, humid, moss-draped montane rainforest. Batukaru is not a photo-op hike — it is for people who want silent jungle, insect song, and a genuine physical challenge.
Why Batukaru Is Nothing Like Batur
Mount Batur is a two-hour walk on open terrain with hundreds of hikers every dawn. Batukaru is the opposite: quiet, long, and wet. Tree roots, soft mud, and slick rocks are your companions the entire way, and phone signal often disappears. That is exactly the appeal — you truly enter one of Bali's last primary forests.
Route, Duration & Difficulty
The standard starting point sits in the Pura Luhur Batukaru area, roughly 1.5–2 hours' drive from Ubud or Canggu. From there the trail climbs steadily with few flat sections.
- Ascent: about 4–5 hours for an averagely fit hiker.
- Descent: 3–4 hours; 9–12 hours total including breaks.
- Difficulty: moderate to hard — over 1,400 metres of elevation gain on slippery, muddy ground.
- Guide: mandatory. Trail junctions are not always obvious and fog rolls in fast.
Gear & Etiquette on a Sacred Mountain
Batukaru is considered one of Bali's most sacred mountains, so physical preparation alone is not enough.
- Trekking shoes with strong grip, a light rain jacket, and dry spare clothes.
- At least 2 litres of water, high-calorie snacks, a headlamp, and a power bank.
- Dress modestly, avoid shouting or crude jokes, and respect ceremonial areas.
- Carry all rubbish back down — there is no cleaning crew on the trail.
Best season: April to October, the dry months. In the rainy season the path turns to deep mud and the risk of slipping rises sharply.
