Pantai Kelan, Tuban: Watch Planes Land While You Eat Grilled Seafood

Got a free afternoon before your flight? Pantai Kelan in Tuban may be the most efficient choice in south Bali. This grey-sand beach sits directly on the southern side of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport runway, so aircraft pass low right above the shoreline. Add family-run grilled seafood warung and a sunset facing Benoa Bay — a complete evening, just 5–10 minutes from the terminal.

Plane Spotting at Close Range

  • The most dramatic moment is usually a landing: the fuselage sweeps in low, engines and all.
  • Air traffic is busy from late afternoon into the evening, so you rarely wait long. The best photo spot is the stretch of sand level with the end of the runway.
  • Do not fly a drone here — this falls inside the airport’s flight safety zone.

The Row of Grilled Seafood Warung

  • Local warung line the shore with grilled fish, squid, prawns and shellfish served with sambal matah.
  • Most sell by the kilogram depending on species; a portion usually starts around IDR 50,000, while premium fish costs considerably more. Ask the price before ordering and have it weighed in front of you.
  • Kedonganan Fish Market and Jimbaran are only 10–15 minutes south, but Kelan is calmer and far closer to the airport.

Beach Conditions & Best Time

  • The sand is greyish-brown and the bay is relatively calm, but this is not a primary swimming beach — people come to sit, eat and take photos.
  • 16.00–19.00 is liveliest; midday is hot with little shade. On weekends arrive early to get a table on the sand.
  • There are basic toilets and rinse-off points around the warung, usually for a voluntary fee. Take your rubbish with you.

Info Praktis & Akses

  • Location: View on Google Maps — Jalan Pantai Kelan, Tuban, Kuta, Badung.
  • Access: from the airport terminal or Kuta head towards Tuban and turn into Jalan Pantai Kelan; roughly 5–10 minutes from the airport and 10–15 minutes from Jimbaran.
  • Parking & tickets: beach entry is generally free; parking is around IDR 2,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car, collected by local residents.
  • How to order food: walk straight to a beachfront warung, look at the fresh catch, ask the price per kilogram before ordering, and confirm that grilling and rice are included. Some warung are on GoFood/GrabFood.
  • Social: search on Instagram for the latest sunset scenes.

If you would rather repeat an afternoon like this than pass through it on a layover, staying around Kuta with an AccessiaPass hotel voucher feels a lot lighter.
