On the Denpasar–Gilimanuk road, almost everyone just drives past. Yet about 20 km before the ferry terminal sits Candikusuma Beach in Candikusuma village, Melaya District, Jembrana Regency: a stretch of volcanic black sand with relatively calm waves and the silhouette of Java's mountains across the Bali Strait. It is nearly always empty, even on weekends.
The Triangular Monument and the Name
The beach's landmark is a triangular monument standing just back from the shoreline. Locals link it to the legend of a keris that emitted light on this very spot — the origin, it is believed, of the name Candikusuma. Two rivers empty into the area, giving the beach a wide shoreline and a landscape utterly unlike Bali's crowded south.
A Rest Area That Actually Works
- Gazebos and an open stage for shade or a proper stretch after hours behind the wheel.
- Generous parking that fits family cars and small coaches alike.
- Local seafood warungs: grilled fish, pepes and nasi campur at roughly IDR 25,000–75,000 a serving.
- Photo spots facing the sea, at their best in the golden light before dusk.
Route, Timing and What to Bring
From Negara town it is only about 20 km west, roughly a 25-minute drive. From Denpasar, count on about 108 km or 3–3.5 hours via Tabanan. Arrive 60–90 minutes before sundown (around 6 pm WITA) and leave a full hour for the sunset. Carry small cash, since many warungs still do not take cards, plus a hat and water — natural shade is limited.
