Omed-Omedan, Sesetan (Denpasar)

Omed-Omedan is a unique annual tradition belonging to Banjar Kaja Sesetan in South Denpasar. In Balinese, omed-omedan means “pull-pull”. The ritual is held on Ngembak Geni — the day after Nyepi — to welcome the Saka New Year. Because Nyepi follows the Saka calendar, the date shifts each year; in 2026 Nyepi falls in March, so Omed-Omedan takes place the day after.

What Happens

The main participants are unmarried young villagers (typically aged 16–30), split into a men's group and a women's group. The two groups pull each other, embrace (gelut), and touch cheeks/foreheads (diman) while villagers douse them with water. Despite the “kissing ritual” nickname, the heart of it is strengthening community togetherness and harmony, not romance for show.

A Brief History

  • Believed to be centuries old, tied to the Puri (royal) heritage in Sesetan
  • Banned in 1984, then revived by the banjar community
  • Now both a cultural draw and a bond of solidarity

How to Attend Respectfully

  • Arrive early — the arena fills fast; the event usually runs around midday
  • Dress modestly; be ready to get wet, as water is thrown in every direction
  • This is a customary rite, not a stage show; follow the banjar committee's guidance and respect the community
  • Important: Nyepi (the day before) brings total silence across all of Bali — the airport closes and you cannot leave your lodging — so arrange accommodation near Denpasar well in advance
