Museum Sidik Jari Denpasar: Paintings Made With Fingertips

Jalan Hayam Wuruk in East Denpasar is not a busy tourist route, and that is exactly where the Fingerprint Painting Museum hides. Its entire collection comes from one unusual technique: painting without a brush, using only dots of colour pressed straight onto the canvas with a fingertip. Its founder, I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pemecutan, built the museum in 1993, inaugurated it in 1994, and opened it to the public a year later.

Why This Museum Is Worth It

This is not a big gallery with queues and uniformed guides. The halls are quiet, you are often the only visitor, and that is the point. From a few steps away the paintings look like ordinary brushwork. Move closer and you finally see the thousands of fingertip dots that build a dancer’s face, a curling wave, or a wayang scene. A relaxed loop takes 20–40 minutes.

What You Will See

  • Three main rooms holding hundreds of fingerprint paintings, from small studies to large canvases.
  • Other works including wooden sculptures, masks, and poetry carved into stone.
  • A shady courtyard and wantilan pavilion plus generous parking — rare in central Denpasar.

What to Pair It With

The museum works best as one stop on a morning loop through cultural Denpasar:

  • Bajra Sandhi Monument at Renon Field, about a 10-minute drive.
  • Museum Bali near Puputan Badung square, roughly 10–15 minutes away.
  • Pasar Badung and Pasar Kumbasari for breakfast and souvenirs.

Keep your voice low in the exhibition rooms, ask before photographing the works, and never touch a painted surface. If small pieces or prints are for sale, buying one is the simplest way to support a family-run museum like this.
