About 8 km west of Amlapura, on the southern slopes of Mount Agung, Sibetan Village in Bebandem district is the largest snake fruit (salak) growing area in Bali. Almost every household farms salak, and the village lanes are hemmed in by abian salak — dense, shady snake fruit groves. This is not a polished attraction but a working village that opens its orchards to guests.
What to Do Here
- Walk the groves: stroll between the spiny clumps and learn some 15 local varieties, including salak gula pasir, sweet with no astringency, and salak nanas.
- Pick your own: a guide shows you how to spot ripe fruit and peel it without getting spiked.
- Taste the products: dodol, chips, syrup, candied salak, salak dates, snake-fruit-seed coffee, and the salak wine made by residents of Banjar Dukuh.
- Stay overnight: several households run simple homestays right among the orchards.
Best Time to Visit
- The main harvest runs roughly December–February, stretching into March in some orchards: fruit is most abundant and cheapest then.
- A smaller harvest (gadon) falls around August–September — less fruit, but the groves are still bearing.
- Come in the morning or early afternoon; the orchard paths get slippery after afternoon rain.
Getting There & What to Bring
- Roughly 8 km from Amlapura, 20 km from Candidasa, and about 1.5 hours by road from Denpasar via Klungkung–Sidemen or the Selat route.
- Sealed roads, fine for cars and scooters; parking, warungs and toilets are available.
- Wear closed shoes, bring a hat and cash — orchards rarely take cards.
