The Balinese statues and split gateway in Pemuteran Bay can only be seen on scuba. As of October 2026 a single boat dive in Pemuteran costs about Rp850,000 (Abyss Ocean World), while Easy Divers lists Rp1,380,000 for two boat dives. The Biorock coral garden in the same bay can be snorkelled straight from the beach with your own mask and a voluntary donation. So the real question is: are you a certified diver?
Temple Garden: new statues, not ancient ruins
According to the official Indonesian tourism portal indonesia.travel, the site was sunk on purpose in 2005 as part of the Reef Gardener community project. A second stage followed in 2006 at around 15 metres so less experienced divers could see it too. It holds more than ten large stone statues on plinths and a 4-metre candi bentar gateway now draped in sea fans and sponges.
Easy Divers' site map splits it into two spots. Temple Garden at 5-18 m suits most certified divers and has gentle currents. Temple Wall at 18-35 m, where the gateway rises from the sand at about 30 m, is for experienced divers with solid buoyancy.
A 2010 photo of divers at the gate went viral as a "lost underwater city". The statues are modern, so don't expect archaeology.
Biorock: snorkel from the shore
The low-voltage steel frames where coral grows sit about 50 metres off the beach. Enter the water in front of the Biorock hut so you don't step on coral. Bring your own gear or rent it at the Biorock office; donations go to maintenance. Our full write-up is in the Biorock Pemuteran coral garden article.
Which one should you pick?
- No licence, with kids, or on a tight budget: Biorock. It costs almost nothing and works whenever the sea is calm.
- Open Water certified: Temple Garden at 5-18 m. Abyss Ocean World requires at least Open Water for its fun dives.
- Advanced and comfortable at depth: Temple Wall down to the 30 m gateway.
The downsides matter. Visibility at Temple Garden is usually moderate, nowhere near as clear as Menjangan Island, and air goes faster on the deeper section. If you have one day and don't dive, Biorock is enough. Divers can do both: statues in the morning, Biorock snorkel in the afternoon.
