Before You Visit Pura Gunung Raung, Taro: Rules, Donation, Odalan

There is no ticket for Pura Agung Gunung Raung, only a donation, but you must wear temple dress and ask the village caretakers for permission first. The temple is on Jalan Raya Taro in Tegallalang, about 18 km (30-45 minutes) north of Ubud. The next pujawali falls on Wednesday 30 September 2026. Other things visitors often miss:

What most visitors don't know

  • The name points to a mountain in Java. According to the lontar Bali Tatwa, quoted in a temple guide by the Bali guides' association HPI, Rsi Markandeya meditated on Mount Raung in East Java before being told to go to Bali. He founded the temple where he saw a burning tree, and the word taru (tree) gave Taro its name. Sources disagree on the founding date (7th, 8th or 17th century), so treat any single year with caution.
  • It has gates on all four sides. detikTravel calls it the only temple in Bali with entrances on the north, east, south and west. It is built of stone and wood with no paint.
  • There is a bridge you must not cross. The Titi Gonggang at the north and south gates is sacred. According to a temple priest quoted by Bali Express, anyone who walks over it must hold a caru cleansing ritual. Stick to the path your guide shows you.
  • Not everyone may enter. The sign at the gate forbids entry without the village head's permission, without Balinese dress, during menstruation or while in mourning. Pregnant women and children who still have milk teeth may not use the east gate. General rules are in our temple etiquette guide.
  • Pujawali is not the best time for tourists. It falls on Buda Kliwon Ugu and the offerings stay for about 10 days. In March 2026 the peak was 4 March and the closing rite 13 March. So from 30 September to around 9 October 2026 the temple is packed with worshippers and tourist access may be limited. After that, the next pujawali is around 28 April 2027.
  • Practical info is scarce. We found no published opening hours or parking fee. Come in the morning, when caretakers are easier to find.

Going with a guide

  • Location: Jalan Raya Taro, between Banjar Taro Kaja and Taro Kelod. View on Google Maps
  • Without a guide: free, voluntary donation (checked September 2026). Bring your own sarong and sash.
  • With a village guide: the Desa Wisata Taro package on the Jadesta portal starts at Rp150,000, including guide, sarong, sash and a drink. A banten pejati offering to pray with the priest costs about Rp150,000 more.
  • Social media: search Instagram.

Since it is in the same village, it pairs easily with the Lembu Putih white cow park in Taro. The HPI guide links those white cattle to Markandeya too.
