The Pura Taman Sari you are looking for is in Banjar Sengguhan, Semarapura Kangin, about half a kilometre northeast of Klungkung's Puputan Square. Entry is free; all you need is a sarong and sash.
Six things people get wrong
- The wrong map pin. Typing "Pura Taman Sari" into Google Maps also brings up Pura Taman Sari Jumpai on the coast and Taman Sari Waterfall in Gianyar. Make sure the result is in Semarapura Kangin, near the town centre.
- Expecting a water garden like Tirta Gangga. There is no swimming pool or park. The draw is two meru towers, one with eleven roofs and one with nine, whose bases rest on a giant stone turtle (bedawang) wrapped by the naga Anantaboga and surrounded by a pond. It depicts the churning of the ocean for the elixir of life.
- Missing the history. The temple is thought to date from around 1710, built together with the Klungkung royal palace under Dewa Agung Jambe, and is now a protected heritage site. Bali's heritage conservation office has restored both meru.
- Arriving without a sarong. According to local cultural records there are no souvenir shops or food and drink kiosks here. Don't count on renting one; bring your own kamen or sarong and sash, plus water.
- Climbing for photos. This is an active temple and a heritage site. Don't step onto the pond edge or shrines. If a ceremony is on, wait outside unless invited, and by custom women who are menstruating do not enter.
- Allowing too much time. The complex is small; 20-30 minutes is enough. No official opening hours are published; if the gate is shut, don't go in without permission and ask the neighbours.
Combine it with central Semarapura
From Kerta Gosa on the side of Puputan Square, the temple is about a 7-10 minute walk. Before or after, stop at Semarapura Market for endek cloth, which is also where to buy a sash if you forgot one.
- Location: View on Google Maps
- Recent photos: search on Instagram
- Cost: free, with a donation box if one is out (checked September 2026).
If you only have an hour in Klungkung, Kerta Gosa is still the priority. Add Pura Taman Sari if meru architecture interests you and you want to see it without tour groups.
