Pura Maospahit Denpasar: A Majapahit Trace in Red Brick

Hidden in busy Denpasar is one of the city's oldest temples: Pura Maospahit on Jl. Sutomo, in the Banjar Gerenceng area of Pemecutan Kaja. Unlike most Balinese temples built from grey volcanic stone, its structures are bare red brick in East Javanese style — a trace of Majapahit influence rarely seen in Bali.

A Majapahit Trace in Red Brick

The temple is commonly dated to the era of Majapahit influence around the 14th century, while chronicle sources (Babad Wongayah Dalem) record the Saka year 1200, or 1278 CE, with Sri Kebo Iwa as its architect. The great Bali earthquake of 1917 damaged it badly; it was then restored while keeping its original style. Today it holds heritage-site status.

What You Will See

  • Red-brick gates and shrines without typical Balinese carving, a striking contrast to other temples.
  • Ancient terracotta statues flanking the entrance as guardians.
  • A Garuda statue and the giant figure of Batara Bayu, god of the wind.
  • Reliefs of Garuda and Bima on either side of the split gate.
  • The Panca Mandala layout: the holiest area sits at the centre rather than facing the mountain.
  • Shady, quiet courtyards with almost no tourists.

Access & Best Time

Roughly 20–30 minutes from Sanur, 30–45 minutes from Kuta, and about an hour from Ubud depending on traffic. Come in the morning, when the light is soft and the brickwork glows warm. It pairs easily with the nearby Bali Museum, Pura Jagatnatha and Pasar Badung.

Etiquette & Dress Code

  • Wear a sarong and sash if you enter the temple grounds.
  • Never climb on or touch the shrines and statues.
  • Give way to worshippers who are praying.
  • Women who are menstruating may not enter.
  • Access to the jeroan (inner courtyard) may be restricted outside ceremony days.
