When Nusa Dua and Geger beaches are crowded with umbrellas and vendors, Sawangan Beach offers a far quieter version. This white sand stretch hides below the cliffs of Sawangan, Benoa, right along the luxury resort belt of The Mulia and Samabe. The entrance lane is small and easy to miss, which is exactly why the sand stays empty.
Why Sawangan Feels Different
The shoreline is long, with soft white sand fenced in by limestone cliffs that cut it off from neighbouring beaches. Unlike the calm Nusa Dua lagoon, the water here faces the open Indian Ocean.
- Atmosphere: quiet even on weekends, ideal for long walks and crowd-free photos
- Views: limestone cliffs, rows of fishing boats, and clean sunrise skies from the eastern side
- Safety note: waves and currents can be strong, so wading near the shore beats swimming far out
Access and the Stairway Down
The hardest part is simply finding the lane. After that it is straightforward.
- About 30 minutes by car from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, or 10 minutes from the ITDC Nusa Dua gate
- The entrance sits on Jalan Raya Nusa Dua Selatan, just before The Mulia complex
- From the parking terrace, walk down dozens of steps covering roughly 50 metres to the sand
- Parking is very limited — only a few cars fit, so a scooter is far more flexible
Best Times and What to Prepare
Facilities exist but stay minimal: basic toilets and a few shaded seats. Food vendors are almost non-existent.
- Arrive 06:00–09:00 for sunrise, cool sand, and the calmest water
- Late afternoon towards 17:00 also works; skip midday, when shade is scarce
- Bring your own water and snacks, plus a bag to carry rubbish back out
- Wear grippy footwear for the stairs, and add a hat and sunscreen
- Check the tide chart: at low tide the sand flat opens up dramatically
