Tabanan is Bali’s “rice barn” and its greenest regency. Set just west of Canggu and Ubud, it holds World Heritage rice terraces, the island’s most iconic sea temple, hidden waterfalls, and natural hot springs — all away from the crowds. This 2026 guide covers the must-see spots, ticket prices, best hours, and an efficient 2-day route.
Jatiluwih & the UNESCO Subak Rice Terraces
Jatiluwih is a sweep of terraced rice fields still farmed with the traditional subak irrigation system, UNESCO-listed since 2012. Come in the morning for soft light, thin mist, and cool mountain air.
- Jatiluwih: ticket Rp75,000 adult / Rp50,000 child for foreigners, Rp25,000 / Rp15,000 for Indonesians (since 1 April 2025); open 08.00–18.00. About 1 hour from Ubud, 1.5 hours from Canggu, 2 hours from the airport. Maps
- Pura Luhur Batukaru: a cool forest temple on the slopes of Mount Batukaru; donation plus sash rental, open morning to afternoon. Easy to combine with Jatiluwih. Maps
Pura Tanah Lot & Alas Kedaton
Pura Tanah Lot sits on a rock in the sea — one of Bali’s icons and its most famous sunset spot. Avoid weekend evenings if you dislike crowds, or arrive early to secure a good position.
- Pura Tanah Lot: ticket Rp75,000 adult / Rp40,000 child for foreigners, Rp30,000 / Rp20,000 for Indonesians; the April 2026 increase was postponed (detikBali, 29 March 2026; checked 21 October 2026). Open 07.00–19.00. Arrive 16.00–16.30 for sunset, or 07.00–09.00 for calm. Only ~30 minutes from Canggu, ~1 hour from the airport. Maps Fees for other sites are in Bali entrance fees 2026 by regency.
- Alas Kedaton: a monkey-and-bat forest near Tabanan town; ticket Rp30,000 (2025 rate; a rise for foreigners reported in August 2025 is not confirmed in force), open 08.00–18.00. Maps
Waterfalls, Hot Springs & Beaches
- Air Terjun Leke Leke: ticket Rp50,000 (foreign) / Rp25,000 (domestic), open 08.00–17.00; an easy 15–20 minute walk from the entrance. Maps
- Pemandian Air Panas Angseri: ticket around Rp10,000–15,000, private pools from ~Rp30,000; open 08.00–18.00, in Baturiti. Maps
- Pantai Balian: a black-sand surf beach with consistent waves, free; about 45 minutes west of Tanah Lot. Maps
- Pantai Kedungu: a wide beach near Tanah Lot, great for sunset and beginner surf, cheap parking. Maps
- Bali Silent Retreat: a silent meditation retreat near Batukaru; reserve ahead for visits or lunch. Maps
A 2-Day Tabanan Route
Day 1: morning at Jatiluwih → midday Pura Luhur Batukaru → afternoon Air Terjun Leke Leke or a soak at Air Panas Angseri. Day 2: morning Alas Kedaton → midday Pantai Kedungu or Balian → close the day with sunset at Pura Tanah Lot. Because distances are long and public transport is limited, a car plus driver (around Rp600,000–800,000 per day) is the most practical option.
