Canggu is not one place. It's a cluster of coastal villages in northern Badung that grew, within a decade, into Bali's hub for surf, specialty coffee, and beach clubs. Pick the wrong sub-area and you'll spend your holiday on a scooter, stuck in traffic. This guide maps Canggu as it actually is — real venues, real price ranges, and the uncomfortable parts too.
Quick Map: Canggu's Five Sub-Areas
- Batu Bolong — the heart of Canggu. A beginner-friendly beach break, cafes shoulder to shoulder, and the worst traffic. Right choice if you want everything within walking distance.
- Berawa — tidier and more upmarket. New villas, Finns Beach Club, and the easiest access to Seminyak.
- Pererenan — Canggu's latest shift. Quieter, rice fields still standing, and the new wave of cafes moving in.
- Echo Beach (Batu Mejan) — a reef break for experienced surfers, and the best sunsets in the area.
- Umalas — no beach, but the calmest and cheapest for longer stays. About 10–15 minutes from the sand.
Cafes & Breakfast Worth Queueing For
- Crate Cafe (Padang Linjong, Batu Bolong) — Canggu's most iconic breakfast, generous portions, around Rp60,000–110,000. Arrive before 9am to avoid the queue. 2026 note: they've announced plans to move to Pererenan, so confirm the location first. View on Google Maps
- Kynd Community (Berawa) — plant-based, the famous pink wall, open roughly 7:30am–10pm, Rp70,000–130,000. View on Google Maps
- Milk & Madu (Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong) — the most family-friendly; lava-stone pizza, ricotta cakes, open 7am–10pm, Rp80,000–150,000. View on Google Maps
- Deus Ex Machina (Batu Mejan) — motorcycle workshop, art gallery, store, and cafe in one compound. Open roughly 8am–10pm; come at night for live music. View on Google Maps
Beach Clubs & Sunset
- Finns Beach Club (Berawa) — the biggest and busiest; tiered pools, open daily roughly 11am–midnight. The standard area is generally free to enter, but daybeds are paid — check that day's rates. View on Google Maps
- La Brisa (Echo Beach) — built from reclaimed fishing-boat timber, bohemian, mellower music. The better sunset pick if Finns feels too loud. View on Google Maps
- The Lawn (Batu Bolong) — a strip of grass facing the sea, small, liveliest on Friday nights. View on Google Maps
- Old Man's (Batu Bolong) — a Canggu institution; free entry, cheap beer, long wooden tables, and the legendary "Dirty Wednesdays" party. Open from midday until late. View on Google Maps
Yoga, Surf & the Road Reality
- Samadi (Jl. Padang Linjong, near Echo Beach) — Canggu's reference for Ashtanga/Mysore; drop-in classes usually Rp150,000–200,000. View on Google Maps
- The Practice (Jl. Batu Bolong) — an open-air bamboo shala focused on pranayama and traditional yoga. View on Google Maps
- Surf — Batu Bolong for beginners (board rental Rp50,000–100,000/hour, lessons around Rp350,000–500,000), Echo Beach only if you already know what you're doing.
- Traffic — here's the honest part. Jl. Batu Bolong and Jl. Pantai Berawa are narrow and effectively single-lane. Between 4pm and 7pm, 3km can take 30 minutes. A scooter (Rp70,000–100,000/day) is the practical answer, but only if you hold an international licence and have real experience — the roads are sandy and potholed, and insurance claims are denied without a valid licence.
Budget, Best Months & Where to Stay
- Budget: Rp400,000–700,000/day (guesthouse, warungs, one cafe).
- Mid-range: Rp900,000–1.8m/day (boutique hotel, the occasional beach club).
- Comfortable: Rp2.5m+ (private-pool villa, driver).
- Best months: May–September (dry season, consistent swell). July–August is the most crowded and expensive. April and October are the sweet spot: weather still good, prices down. January–February brings heavy rain and drifted rubbish on the beach.
- Where to stay: Batu Bolong if you want to walk everywhere; Berawa with family; Pererenan or Umalas if you want quiet and saner prices.
Canggu makes the most sense when your accommodation cost is locked in first — the rest can go to cafes, surf lessons, and sunsets. Compare hotels across Batu Bolong, Berawa, and Pererenan, then secure a stay voucher on AccessiaPass before the July–August peak, when rates here climb the hardest. Read the voucher terms, pick your dates, and leave your daily budget for the things you'll actually remember.
