Desa Carangsari, Badung: The Birthplace of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Above the Ayung Valley

Roughly 45 minutes north of Denpasar, the road narrows between terraced rice fields and the cliffs of the Ayung River. That is where you find Desa Carangsari in Petang district, Badung — the birthplace of national hero I Gusti Ngurah Rai and a tourism village that made the top 50 of the Indonesian Tourism Village Awards (ADWI) 2021. The mood is quiet, far from the bustle of south Bali, yet still easy to reach in a single trip from Ubud.

Traces of the National Hero

  • Puri Agung Carangsari, the palace where I Gusti Ngurah Rai was born; old Balinese architecture still inhabited by descendants of the royal family.
  • The I Gusti Ngurah Rai monument inside the village, a pilgrimage stop for school groups and history travellers.
  • Topeng Tugek Carangsari, the village's signature masked dance that has been performed as far away as Los Angeles; shows can be booked through the village tourism managers.

Nature and Activities

  • Ayung River rafting — Carangsari is the western put-in point. Operators such as Alam Tirta Rafting Carangsari and True Bali Experience run about two hours on the water, in the region of Rp300k per person.
  • Bali Elephant Camp on Jalan Tukad Ayung, open roughly 09.00–15.00, cares for a herd of Sumatran elephants beside the valley.
  • Village cycling and trekking along rice field dykes and the Ayung riverside trails, around Rp100k per person.
  • Taman Beji Samuan for the melukat purification ritual, around Rp100k including guidance.

Staying and Shopping

Carangsari has homestays, converted village rice barns and even glamping, ranging from about Rp100k to Rp600k a night — ideal if you want to wake up looking at rice fields. For souvenirs, look for Junglegold Bali chocolate, locally ground coffee and trigona honey produced by villagers. Sangeh and its monkey forest sit on the same route home.
