Is Ice and Fresh Juice Safe to Drink in Bali?

Ice in Bali is generally safe when it is factory tube ice, the clear cylinders with a hole in the middle sold in branded bags, and risky when it is chipped block ice or ice made in a warung freezer from unknown water. Fresh juice is fine when the fruit is washed, cut on a clean surface and blended with tube ice or gallon water; the usual trouble is ice and cut fruit that have been sitting out.

Why is ice riskier than bottled water?

Bali tap water is not for drinking (see is Bali tap water safe to drink). The catch is that you can't see what water was frozen. Freezing does not kill every germ, and the CDC Yellow Book notes that the alcohol in a cocktail will not kill pathogens in ice made from contaminated water. The CDC advises avoiding ice unless you are "reasonably certain" it was made from safe water.

How do you tell tube ice from block ice?

  • Tube ice (es kristal): uniform, clear cylinders with a hole through the middle. Machine-made in factories from treated water and sold in labelled plastic bags. Most restaurants, cafés and hotels in tourist areas use it.
  • Block ice (es balok): big blocks roughly half a metre to a metre long, broken up with a hammer or saw into irregular chunks. It is mainly for chilling fish and bottles, not for going into your glass.
  • Home freezer ice: small cubes from trays, often cloudy in the centre. Safe or not depends entirely on the water used.

One caveat: clear ice alone does not prove it was made from boiled water. A Jawa Pos fact-check found the claim "clear ice always comes from boiled water" has no expert backing. The hollow tube shape and a branded bag are better clues than colour.

What do Japan and Korea advise?

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs health page for Indonesia (世界の医療事情, updated 1 October 2024) says Indonesian tap water is not drinkable and recommends ordering drinks "without ice" except at trusted restaurants. It also says cut fruit and raw vegetables need stricter hygiene because they are not cooked. Korea's disease agency KDCA, in its overseas infectious disease map released on 29 July 2026, advises eating cooked food and drinking boiled water when travelling in Southeast Asia.

In Indonesia, packaged ice and drinks count as processed food, with microbial limits set by BPOM Regulation 13/2019, amended by BPOM Regulation 3/2026 (signed 18 February 2026). Those rules cover licensed products, not ice chipped on a street cart.

Juice, coconut ice and smoothie bowls: which are safe?

  • A whole young coconut opened in front of you and drunk straight, no ice: low risk.
  • Juices and smoothies at cafés in Canggu, Ubud or Seminyak: usually made with tube ice and gallon water. If unsure, ask "es kristal?" or order it without ice.
  • Es campur, es teler and coconut ice from carts: the riskiest for a stomach that isn't used to local bugs, since the ice is often chipped from a block and the cut fruit sits in the heat.
  • Hot coffee and tea: the CDC says drinks made with water that has just been boiled are generally safe.

Already had a drink and now have diarrhoea?

Most traveller's diarrhoea is mild and improves within one to three days with plenty of oral rehydration fluids. Warning signs, when to see a doctor and pharmacy remedies are covered in Bali belly: remedies, when to see a doctor, prevention. Emergency numbers and clinics are in our Bali emergency health guide, and the general rules for your stay are in Bali rules.

Is the ice sold at Indomaret and Alfamart safe?
Branded bags of tube ice at minimarts are factory-made for consumption. Make sure the bag is still sealed.
