Rising to about 3,031 metres, Mount Agung is the highest and most sacred volcano in Bali. For Balinese Hindus it is a spiritual centre where the gods reside, and the great Pura Besakih temple stands on its slopes. The trek to the summit begins around midnight so you reach the top above the clouds just as the sun rises — a challenging experience that turns fatigue into an unforgettable moment in Karangasem.
Two Trekking Routes
There are two main routes. Pasar Agung (Selat) is shorter, usually starting around 2:00 am and taking 7–8 hours round trip to the southern peak. Pura Besakih is the full route to the highest summit, starting earlier around 11:00 pm–midnight and lasting up to 10–12 hours. A licensed guide is mandatory on both routes because the terrain is dark, steep and rocky.
Preparation & Gear
This is a strenuous trek that demands good fitness. Temperatures at the summit can be very cold and windy. What to prepare:
- Trekking shoes with grippy soles and thick socks.
- A warm jacket, gloves and a hat for the pre-dawn cold.
- A headlamp (usually provided by the guide, but bring a spare) and about 2 litres of water.
- Energy snacks; a light breakfast is usually included in the package.
Safety & Mountain Status
Mount Agung is an active volcano. The routes are sometimes closed during temple ceremonies or when volcanic activity increases. Always check the latest status through your guide or local authorities before booking, and never hike without a licensed guide.
