On the eastern edge of Ubud, in the village of Tengkulak Kaja near the Goa Gajah road, sits a property long known as The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah. Since early 2020 it has returned to family management and now trades as Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana. The setting is unchanged: the former private estate of architect and art collector Hendra Hadiprana, roughly five hectares of working rice fields and gardens, with only about 20 suites and villas.
An art estate, not just a hotel
Hadiprana designed the place in the 1980s as a family retreat, then handed management to GHM in 2004. His art collection still sets the tone: sculptures, paintings and Indonesian artefacts fill the lobby, the open corridors and the rooms themselves. The name Tanah Gajah comes from Goa Gajah, the ancient cave temple just down the road.
Suites, villas and butler service
- One Bedroom Club Suite — around 80 sqm, the most compact category.
- One Bedroom Club Pool Villa and the Premier version — 220–250 sqm with a private pool.
- Two Bedroom Club Family Pool Villa — 250 sqm for families.
- The Hadiprana Estate — 570 sqm, sleeping up to six adults.
- Butler service comes with every room category, along with a stocked minibar.
Dining, spa and rice fields
The main restaurant, The Tempayan, serves Balinese cooking alongside western classics, while Kurasu at Panen Padi Lounge pours specialty coffee and ceremonial matcha. The Art of Spa has two treatment suites facing the paddies. The resort can arrange rice-field treks, cooking classes, Kecak performances and early-morning hot-air balloon rides.
What it costs
This is luxury boutique territory, so budget accordingly: rates generally run around IDR 5–15 million per night depending on suite type, length of stay and season, with The Hadiprana Estate well above that. Prices climb sharply in July–August and over the year-end holidays, so lock in your dates early.
