The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, known in Balinese as Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, is one of the icons of Ubud. This nature reserve and Hindu temple complex is home to around 1,260 long-tailed macaques living freely among giant banyan trees draped in moss. The atmosphere is shaded, mystical, and feels deeply alive the moment you step in.
What You Can See
This roughly 12.5-hectare site is more than just a place to watch monkeys. Inside are three sacred temples, including Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal used for worship. Stone pathways lead you past mossy statues, old bridges, and a small river in the forest valley.
- Hundreds of wild macaques interacting closely with visitors
- Large banyan trees hundreds of years old
- Three ancient, sacred Hindu temples
- Dragon statues and stone carvings covered in moss
Tips to Protect Your Belongings from Monkeys

- Keep glasses, hats, and phones inside a closed bag
- Do not carry visible food or plastic
