Pura Bukit Gumang, Bugbug: What to Know Before the Climb

Pura Bukit Gumang sits on a hilltop about 305 m above sea level in the customary village of Bugbug, Karangasem, and the only way up is several hundred steps followed by a rocky path that local media put at roughly 40 minutes on foot. From the top you look over Candidasa, Gili Tepekong and the ferries crossing the Lombok Strait. If you plan to climb, a few things tend to surprise people halfway up.

Seven things people often miss

  • It is a working temple, not a park. Gumang is a Dang Kahyangan temple dedicated to Ida Bhatara Gumang, closely tied to the founding story of Bugbug. A sarong (kamen) and sash are required, and women who are menstruating may not go up.
  • Bring cash. Jawa Pos (March 2025) listed entry at Rp10,000 for Indonesians and Rp20,000 for foreign visitors, plus sarong rental at Rp10,000/Rp20,000. Some other sites describe entry as free or donation-based, so carry small notes. Checked September 2026.
  • The trail is harder than it looks. After the stairs comes a rocky climb over tree roots, with several rises that feel like the summit but are not. Shoes with grip are safer than flip-flops.
  • There are monkeys. They generally do not attack, but they grab plastic bags and food. Keep sunglasses and snacks in a closed bag.
  • Open 07:00-19:00 WITA. Sunset is the main reason people climb in the afternoon. Bring a torch, because the way down is dark and unlit.
  • Watch for the Usaba season. Usaba Gumang is held every sasih Kapat, the fourth Balinese month, around October. In even-numbered years the villages of Jasri, Ngis and Bebandem join in; in 2024 it ran 16-18 October and police asked drivers to use alternative roads through Bugbug. 2026 is an even year, but no date had been announced at the time of writing. Thousands of worshippers climb during the ceremony, so visitors should postpone the hike or watch respectfully from the side.
  • Not for everyone. There is no vehicle track to the top, so it is not wheelchair accessible and is hard going for small children or anyone with knee problems.

Bugbug has two hills; do not mix them up

Gumang is not the same as Bukit Asah, the clifftop grassland on the east side of the village that is popular for camping and sunrise. Gumang is more sacred and much harder on the legs; Bukit Asah is relaxed. You can do both in a day if you stay in Candidasa, a few minutes' drive from the foot of the hill. Hours, Location and Contacts

  • Location: Desa Adat Bugbug, Karangasem district, on the Candidasa-Amlapura road. View on Google Maps
  • Hours: 07:00-19:00 WITA daily, except during major ceremonies.
  • Cost: about Rp10-20k plus sarong rental, cash. Parking at the foot of the hill.
  • Ceremony info: the Desa Adat Bugbug website (desaadatbugbug.com) and the Pura Gumang Desa Bugbug Facebook page. Recent photos: search on Instagram.
  • Best time: start climbing around 16:30 to reach the top before sunset. The dry season, April to October, is usually clearer.

Carry at least a litre of water per person and set off earlier than you think you need to. Coming down stone steps in the dark is much slower than going up.
