While hundreds of people jostle for sunrise on Mount Batur, its taller neighbour stays almost empty. Mount Abang (2,152 m) is Bali's third-highest mountain and the highest point on the rim of the Batur caldera. On a single hike you may meet only a handful of other walkers — a genuine hidden gem for caldera views without the queue.
The Trail from Pura Puncak Tulukbiyu
The usual starting point is Pura Puncak Tulukbiyu in Suter Village, Kintamani, Bangli. From the temple courtyard the path drops straight into dense, shady mountain forest — the complete opposite of Batur's bare volcanic sand. Allow around 2–3 hours up and 1.5–2 hours down. Small shrines along the way mark your progress.
Terrain and What to Bring
- Terrain: soil and tree roots with several steep pitches; very slippery after rain, so grippy shoes are essential.
- Temperature: cold, often below 18°C before dawn — bring a jacket, beanie and light gloves.
- Pack: at least 1.5 litres of water, a torch or headlamp for the pre-dawn start, snacks and a light rain jacket.
- Local guide: roughly IDR 300,000–600,000 per group, depending on group size and departure time. Strongly recommended, as the forest junctions are easy to confuse.
The View and the Summit Temple
From the top the whole caldera opens up: deep-blue Lake Batur, the cone of Mount Batur below you, and the silhouette of Mount Agung to the east. A temple still in active use stands at the summit. Respect it: dress modestly, keep your voice down, never climb on the shrines, and carry out every scrap of rubbish.
