Far from South Bali’s tourist circuit, the village of Bebandem in Karangasem hosts East Bali’s liveliest livestock market. From before dawn, small trucks unload reddish-brown Bali cattle, pigs in bamboo crates and goats bleating under neon lights. This is not a tourist attraction but the workplace of farmers and cattle brokers who settle prices through long conversation and a handshake.
What Happens at the Market
- Bali cattle are the stars; on a busy market day more than a hundred head arrive and transaction values run into hundreds of millions of rupiah.
- Pigs, goats and free-range chickens trade in separate areas; for reference, a 250–300 kg Bali cow sells for around Rp20 million.
- The general Bebandem market sits right beside it: produce from the slopes of Mount Agung, tubruk coffee, Balinese sweets and the local favourite bubur sumsum.
Market Days, Hours and Routes
- Bebandem follows the Balinese market cycle that comes around roughly every three days; for the livestock market, local reports mention about five openings a month. The schedule can shift, so check the local market-day schedule before you go.
- Best window is 05:00–09:00 WITA; by 10:00 it breaks up. Routes: 20–30 minutes from Amlapura, 40–50 minutes from Candidasa, 2–2.5 hours from Denpasar and 2.5–3 hours from Ngurah Rai Airport via the Ida Bagus Mantra road.
- Bring small cash notes, closed shoes because the ground turns muddy, a light jacket and a torch.
Photography and Bargaining Etiquette
- Ask permission before photographing faces and switch off the flash; sudden light unsettles the animals.
- Do not block livestock lanes, touch the animals or climb the pens without permission.
- Price negotiation is serious business; never interrupt one for a better angle, and buy something small — a glass of coffee is enough.
