Purnama Beach, Gianyar: Black Sand, Melukat Rituals, and a Quiet Sunrise

Between Ketewel and Saba, in Sukawati village, Gianyar, lies Purnama Beach — a broad line of volcanic black sand that is almost always quiet. Unlike southern Bali's beaches, Purnama isn't a sunbathing destination. For Balinese, it is a spiritual shore: a place for melukat (self-purification) and one of the main sites for melasti ceremonies before Nyepi.

Melukat and Pura Erjeruk

Near the beach stands Pura Erjeruk, with a holy water source that draws crowds on full moon and new moon days. Non-Hindu visitors are welcome as long as they dress modestly with a sarong and sash, and refrain from close-up photography of people praying. There is no official ticket for melukat — a voluntary donation in the provided box is enough.

Sunrise and Turtle Conservation

Facing east, Purnama delivers a clean sunrise over the sea around 06:00. The Gianyar coastline — including Purnama, Lembeng, and Saba — is also where turtle eggs are collected by local conservation groups; hatchling releases usually take place during the nesting season around July to October and are often open to the public.
