Echo Beach, properly Pantai Batu Mejan, sits at the western edge of Canggu, right at the end of Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan. Volcanic black sand, punchy reef waves and a line of ocean-facing warungs make it one of Bali’s busiest sunset spots — and also one of its beaches that demands the most care.
Waves for Experienced Surfers
There are three main breaks here: Echo Beach Left, a fast, shallow left-hand reef break directly in front of the end of the road; Sandbar, the hollow section in the middle; and Rivermouth, a quick right-hander by the river. All of them break over reef and suit intermediate to advanced surfers — this is not a beach for learning to surf. Beginners are better off practising at Batu Bolong or Berawa first, then coming back here to watch.
Pura Batu Mejan, Sunset & Warungs on the Sand
- The original name comes from Pura Batu Mejan, the temple standing right at the edge of the beach; respect the prayer area, dress modestly and never climb on the temple structures.
- Sunset in Bali generally falls between 18:00 and 18:30; arrive 45–60 minutes early if you want a front-row bean bag.
- Food and drink along this strip include Warung Ketut for nasi campur and grilled fish at warung prices, La Brisa (Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan No.118) for the beach club atmosphere, and Deus Ex Machina slightly inland for coffee and custom motorcycles.
Safety & Access
- At low tide, the field of sharp reef on the left side of the beach is fully exposed — wear sandals or reef boots and do not walk barefoot.
- Currents can be strong and there is no sheltered lagoon here; swim only on the sandy section at higher tide and watch the lifeguard flags.
- Scooter parking is around IDR 2,000 and a car a few thousand rupiah more; the road down to the beach is narrow and jams up before sunset.
Practical Info & Booking
- Location: the end of Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan, Canggu, Badung — between Batu Bolong Beach and Pererenan. View on Google Maps
- Hours & tickets: the beach is open 24 hours with no entrance fee; warungs and bars generally run from morning until late, scooter parking around IDR 2,000.
- Getting there: roughly 40 minutes by car from Seminyak and 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport; a scooter or ride-hailing car is easiest, and avoid arriving right at 17:30 when the road clogs up.
- Booking/Info: the beach itself is free to enter, but sunset tables at the beach clubs are worth reserving ahead; check the latest scene by searching on Instagram.
Come in the late afternoon, walk the black sand towards Pererenan, then head back to watch the surfers while the sky turns orange — that is Echo Beach at its best. Planning to stay nearby? Compare rates and book your hotel voucher on AccessiaPass.
