Biaung Beach, Denpasar: Entry, Parking, and Is It Safe to Swim?

Biaung Beach, on Jl. Gumitir in Kesiman Kertalangu village, East Denpasar, charges no entry fee. Parking is Rp2,000 for a scooter and Rp5,000 for a car according to IDN Times (May 2025; rechecked online in October 2026). It is a black-sand beach running about 2.5 km along the east coast, just north of Padang Galak.

How long from Sanur or Ubud?

From Sanur about 15-20 minutes via Jl. Prof. IB Mantra, then down a village lane to the shore. From central Denpasar about 30 minutes, and from the airport about 50 minutes (IDN Times). From Ubud allow 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic through Batubulan.

Is it safe to swim at Biaung?

It is not recommended. On 28 November 2025 an 11-year-old boy drowned after being dragged by the current while swimming at Biaung with friends; his body was found about an hour later at Padang Galak Beach (detikBali). The Balawista lifeguard team came from Segara Ayu in Sanur by speedboat after the alarm was raised; the report mentions no guard on duty at Biaung itself. Denpasar's tourism guide also describes the waves as fairly challenging and suited only to experienced surfers. If you want a swim, Sanur's reef-protected beaches make more sense. Flag meanings and how to escape a rip are covered in our Bali beach safety guide.

What else is there besides sand and surf?

A community-run turtle hatchery, with hatchling releases held now and then on no fixed schedule. Some sources mention horses for hire along the sand. The Banjar Biaung youth group has also held the Biaung Kite Festival in August, during kite season. For breakfast, local sources point to bubuh Bali Biaung, a spiced rice porridge sold by villagers.

When is the best time?

Early morning, for sunrise over the sea with Mount Agung in the distance on clear days. Food sellers usually open only in the afternoon, so mornings are quieter but with fewer snacks on offer.

What are the downsides?

Facilities are basic: toilets, a children's swing, a wide parking area and afternoon food stalls (IDN Times). The black sand heats up fast towards midday. And the current, as above, makes this a beach for a morning walk and sea views rather than a lazy swim.

Quick facts

In kite season, July to August, the sky above Biaung and Padang Galak fills with traditional kites. Dates for the big contest at Padang Galak are in our Bali Kite Festival article.
