Berawa Beach, Canggu: Black Sand, Golden Sunsets and Bali's Beach Club Strip

Berawa Beach is Canggu at its liveliest. This stretch of grey-black volcanic sand runs through Tibubeneng, North Kuta, Badung: calm enough for a morning walk and a surf session, then a full sunset stage by late afternoon. It sits roughly 25–35 minutes by road from Seminyak and 45–75 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport, depending on traffic.

What Makes Berawa Different

  • Beach clubs right on the sand: Atlas Beach Club, FINNS Beach Club and Vue Beach Club all face the Berawa surf directly. La Brisa sits on the Echo Beach side, about 10 minutes west.
  • Waves for intermediate surfers: the Berawa beach break can be mellow on a small swell, but turns punchy with short barrels when it picks up. Board rental along Jalan Pantai Berawa runs about IDR 50,000–100,000 per hour.
  • The last rice fields: the small lanes leading to the beach still hide paddies squeezed between villas, a favourite stroll before the sun drops.

Best Hours and Access

The sweet spot is 4.30–6.30 pm, when golden light bounces off the dark sand and the beanbags along the shore start filling up. The beach is open 24 hours with no entry ticket; you only pay parking, usually around IDR 2,000–5,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000–10,000 for a car. The end of Jalan Pantai Berawa is narrow, so a scooter is far more practical than a car. Fresh coconuts and cold beer at the beach warungs cost around IDR 25,000–50,000.

Swimming Safely at Berawa

  • Berawa has rip currents and a sharp shore break. Watch the red-and-yellow flags and stay inside the marked area.
  • Canggu's public beaches are not always patrolled by lifeguards all day, so avoid swimming alone or after dark.
  • If a current pulls you out, do not fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are free of it, then head back in.
  • Bring sandals: volcanic sand holds heat and can be scorching before 4 pm.
