Neka Art Museum Ubud: Tracing Bali's Painting Legacy in Sanggingan

Neka Art Museum is one of Bali's most important art museums, established in 1976 by the Balinese collector Wayan Suteja Neka. Set on Jalan Raya Sanggingan, Campuhan, Ubud, it is not merely a gallery but a garden compound laid out like a traditional Balinese village, with several pavilions each devoted to a different theme. More than 300 works are on display, making it the best place to understand the journey of Balinese painting from the classical era to the modern age.

Paintings You Must See

Each pavilion guides visitors through a different chapter in Bali's art history. You will see how foreign painters such as Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet reshaped Ubud's art scene in the 1930s.

  • Balinese Painting Hall: classical wayang style in the Kamasan tradition, plus the Ubud and Batuan schools.
  • Lempad Pavilion: works by the maestro I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (1862–1978), bold ink lines depicting epics and folk legends.
  • Young Artist style: vivid, naive paintings by young artists from Penestanan.
  • Keris Hall & foreign artists: a collection of Balinese keris daggers and works by international artists who lived on the island.

Visiting Tips

  • Come in the morning when the light is soft and the Sanggingan air is cool.
  • Allow 1.5–2 hours to enjoy every pavilion without rushing.
