Museum Pasifika Nusa Dua: The Pacific Art Gallery That Is Almost Always Empty

In the middle of the ITDC complex (formerly BTDC) in Nusa Dua, specifically in Block P, stands a museum most visitors walk right past: Museum Pasifika. Around 11 galleries display hundreds of artworks from Indonesia, Polynesia, the Pacific Islands, Indochina and Europe. The rooms are large, air-conditioned, and quite often you will have them entirely to yourself.

Why Museum Pasifika Is Special

  • Bali’s legendary painters: works by Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès, Theo Meier, Arie Smit and Rudolf Bonnet — the names that shaped modern Balinese art — hang side by side under one roof.
  • Oceanic art: dedicated rooms for Polynesia and the Pacific, with artefacts and paintings from the same era Gauguin was working in Tahiti — a collection like this is rare in Southeast Asia.
  • Quiet & comfortable: unlike Uluwatu or Tanah Lot, there are no queues and no crowds here. Perfect for a rainy day or a midday heat escape.

Visiting Tips

  • Allow 1.5–2 hours for an unhurried walk-through; the Indonesian and Pacific rooms hold the densest collections.
  • Come right after opening or in the late afternoon — the light is nicer and any tour groups have moved on.
  • The museum sits inside the gated ITDC estate; tell the gate staff or your taxi/ride-hailing driver “Museum Pasifika, Block P”.
  • Photography for personal use is generally fine, but follow the signs in certain rooms.
