Bukit Teletubbies, Nusa Penida: Rolling Green Hills at the Island's Southeastern Tip

At the southeastern tip of Nusa Penida the road narrows and the landscape changes abruptly: dozens of rounded hills packed side by side, soft green just after the rains and golden at the end of the dry season. Locals and travellers nicknamed it Bukit Teletubbies because the shape recalls the hills from the children's series. The spot sits on the boundary between Dusun Julingan (Desa Tanglad) and Dusun Sedehing (Desa Sekartaji), Nusa Penida district, Klungkung regency.

Why It Feels Different

Where Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach mean queueing for a single photo, here you can pull over on the shoulder and not meet another soul for ten minutes. All you hear is wind and cowbells.

Best Time to Come

The hills are greenest around March and April, shortly after the rainy season. Arrive early, roughly 05.30–08.00, or late afternoon towards sunset around 18.00 WITA. Midday is fiercely hot with almost no shade. Bring your own water: there are no warungs, public toilets, or official ticket booths at the hills.

Route and Road Conditions

From Banjar Nyuh or Buyuk harbour, head east through Sampalan and on to Tanglad: roughly 22–30 km and 60–90 minutes depending on the route. Some stretches are smooth, others climb and drop steeply over broken surface, so a small automatic scooter is not ideal. Combine the trip with Atuh Beach, the Molenteng treehouse and Diamond Beach, all around 5 km away.

• Getting there: 22–30 km or 60–90 minutes from Banjar Nyuh harbour via Sampalan–Tanglad; uneven asphalt with steep climbs, safest on a powerful motorbike or a car with a driver.
