Bali has plenty of hot springs, but most of them are busy. Belulang Hot Spring, in Banjar Belulang, Mengesta village, Penebel district of Tabanan, still feels like a village bathhouse: open-air pools at the foot of Mount Batukaru, ringed by terraced rice fields and a rocky river. Compared with Angseri or Penatahan (Yeh Panes), which are run far more commercially, Belulang is quieter, plainer and much cheaper.
What the Pools Are Like
- Natural sulphur water at around 40°C, sourced from springs on the flanks of Mount Batukaru.
- Two open-air pools — one large, one small — plus six to seven spouts that work like a natural shoulder massage.
- The larger pool fits roughly 8–10 people; at the smaller one, men and women are asked not to bathe together because it sits beside Pura Beji.
- The sulphur smell is mild, and a clear, fast-running river flows right beside the pools.
Tickets, Hours & Facilities
- Entry is very cheap: roughly Rp5,000 for domestic visitors and Rp10,000 for foreigners (prices can change, so carry extra cash).
- The site is effectively open every day, but it is best visited from morning to late afternoon since the path and stairs have little lighting.
- Basic facilities: parking, changing and rinsing rooms, toilets, and a few warung selling bakso, noodles and coffee.
- There are no online tickets, official website or phone number — you simply pay on arrival.
Getting There & What to Bring
- About 40–60 minutes from Ubud and 1–1.5 hours from Canggu or Denpasar; the usual route passes Marga before climbing to Penebel.
- Some village roads are narrow and potholed — a scooter or a small car handles them better than a large van.
- From the car park it is a 100–200 metre walk down a concrete path and steps along the rice fields; non-slip footwear helps a lot.
- Bring a towel, a change of clothes, drinking water and small cash notes; do not leave valuables by the pool.
- Locals also use the site for melukat purification, so dress modestly and keep the noise down.
