Warung Bu Ribu Sengkidu: Marlin Satay and Pepes Since 1950

A full plate at Warung Bu Ribu, with rice, pepes, satay and marlin fish soup, costs Rp30,000 according to a trends.co.id report from October 2025. This home-run warung in Banjar Dinas Mendira, Sengkidu village, Manggis district, Karangasem has been selling since 1950 and is now run by the third generation, Ni Nyoman Mariani, known as Bu Ribu.

What to order

Almost everyone takes the full set. The marlin pepes (lempet) comes with two spice pastes: Karangasem-style base rajang and a plecing chilli mix. The spices are still pounded by hand, the pepes is smoked over coconut shell and charcoal, and the satay is grilled to order.

• Set of rice, pepes, satay and soup: Rp30,000
• Extra satay: Rp1,000 per skewer
• Extra pepes: Rp5,000 per parcel
• Fish soup on its own: Rp25,000 according to the October 2025 report, while a 2023 article still listed Rp10,000. Ask before you order.

According to detikBali (2022), the warung can go through around 200 pepes a day, and TV chefs Juna and Renata once came to watch the cooking.

The downsides

The warung sits in a narrow lane, Jalan Rurung Anyar, inside a residential area, so large cars struggle and a scooter is far easier. Seating is limited and the kitchen is open with no partition, so smoke sometimes drifts to the tables. It is cash only, not wheelchair accessible, and some reviews say it may close on holy days or during village ceremonies. Arrive too late in the afternoon and dishes may have run out.

• Hours: around 11:00-16:00 per its Google listing, though other reports say it opens from 10:00. Google Maps still showed it as operating when checked in September 2026.
• Ordering: walk in, no reservations. Bring cash.

Come just before noon so both pepes versions are still available, then head down to the Candidasa beach and lagoon a few minutes further east.
