The Titik Nol (Zero Point) area of Singaraja, in front of the Buleleng regent's office and the Singa Ambara Raja lion statue, was consecrated on Wednesday 29 July 2026 and given a new name, Praja Mandala Singa Ambara Raja. The name was picked from around 868 public entries in a naming contest, RRI reported. The makeover was funded by a Rp25 billion special grant from neighbouring Badung regency and took about four and a half months from February 2026. It is a free public space open to everyone.
If you are staying in Lovina, the practical question is this: with one evening in Singaraja, should you go to Titik Nol, the old Buleleng harbour, or Penimbangan Beach?
What changed at Titik Nol
The concept is heritage, meant to revive Singaraja's past as capital of the former Lesser Sunda province. There is new andesite paving, 75 pavement lamps first switched on on 23 June 2026, park benches, and freshly planted tabebuia trees for shade. Regent I Nyoman Sutjidra said the grounds of the regent's office and official residence have been opened as a child-friendly green space and as a stop on a Singaraja city tour. Security relies on CCTV, traditional village guards from Banjar Paketan and Banjar Tegal, and speed traps on the north, east and west sides to deter street racing.
Both detikBali and tatkala.co describe late afternoon as the busiest time: locals sit, exercise and take photos, and some compare the feel to Yogyakarta. A satay seller near the square told detikBali in August 2026 that her stall used to go quiet by 9 pm and now stays busy until 1 or 2 am. Satay with rice cake starts at Rp15,000.
This is only phase one. Buleleng plans to extend the work next year to the palace (puri) area, Pasar Buleleng, west as far as the Buleleng cemetery, and the north side near Taman Kota. The lobby of the regent's office is also being returned to its old role as a place where residents can come to air complaints or talk, with the high walls gone. In practice, central Singaraja will keep changing through 2026-2027, and photos you see on social media may date quickly.
Three evening options in Singaraja
- Titik Nol (Praja Mandala Singa Ambara Raja): liveliest after 5 pm and into the night, when the lamps come on. Its appeal is the town-square atmosphere and the Lesser Sunda history. It does not face the sea, so it is not a place to watch the sun drop into the water.
- Old Buleleng harbour: waterfront in Kampung Bugis, about 10 minutes from the centre. Best from 4:30 to 7 pm, with the Yudha Mandala Tama monument and street food. The floating pier has been closed since January 2026 after wave damage.
- Penimbangan Beach: about 4 km from the centre, black sand, low-table warungs facing the sea serving tipat blayag and grilled fish. Best if you want to eat while waiting for sunset.
The downsides of Titik Nol
Midday is still hot because the tabebuia trees are newly planted; the government itself says the shade trees are there to make the area comfortable especially at midday. You cannot park along the core area; use official parking such as the Bapenda office on the north side, Gedung Laksmi Graha on the west and the regent's office car park on the south. The old-town makeover is not finished either: Pasar Anyar and Jalan Diponegoro are being reworked with a December 2026 target, so expect diversions nearby. Finally, map apps may not know the new name yet.
The verdict
With a single evening, start at the old Buleleng harbour at 4:30 pm for sunset over the sea, then move to Titik Nol after 6:30 pm when the lamps are on and the satay stalls fill up. Choose Penimbangan if your main goal is a beachside meal. Titik Nol alone is worth a stop if you are already in Singaraja or enjoy town history, but it is not yet a reason to drive all the way from south Bali.
