About 40 minutes north of central Ubud, the road narrows past rice fields and bamboo groves to Banjar Taro Kaja in Desa Taro. This is where Taman Wisata Lembu Putih Taro sits: a wide pasture holding dozens of white cattle held sacred by the people of Desa Pakraman Taro Kaja. The ticket is cheap and the mood far calmer than Tegallalang.
Why These White Cattle Are Sacred
- Villagers believe the white cattle are the mount of Lord Shiva, so the herd belongs to the village — never to a private owner.
- Calves are handed to the village at around six months old; they may not be kept privately, let alone slaughtered.
- According to the managers the herd numbers around 56 head, under the Yayasan Lembu Putih foundation.
- The cattle join major ceremonies such as Ngasti, led around the ceremonial ground before returning to their pen.
What to Do Here
- Take close-up photos with the cattle — follow the keepers' instructions and never push closer.
- Sit in the bale bengong or the wantilan hall while children use the playground.
- Have lunch at Nandini Resto inside the park grounds.
- Some visitors come to ask for blessings; stay respectful if anyone is praying.
Combine It With Nearby Stops
- The Fireflies Garden on Jalan Raya Taro Kaja — a firefly reserve, best after dark, around Rp100,000 including a hot drink.
- Mason Elephant Park and Pura Gunung Kawi Taro, one of the oldest temples in the area.
- The Tegallalang rice terraces, about 20 minutes south.
