To catch sunrise at Sukawana Sunrise Spot you need to leave Ubud at about 03:45. The drive takes roughly an hour and a half, and in October and November the sun appears behind Mount Abang and Mount Batur at around 06:00 Bali time. The viewpoint is in Banjar Paketan, Sukawana village, on the Pura Penulisan-Balingkang road, a few minutes from the highest temple in Bali.
Timeline from Ubud
- 03:45 leave Ubud via Tegallalang, climb to Penelokan, then turn towards Penulisan. The road is dark and often foggy, so hire a car with a driver if you are not used to riding a scooter in the mountains.
- 05:15 arrive, pay the entry fee and find a spot on the bamboo deck. The bridge to the lookout is solid but narrow, so expect a short queue when it is busy.
- 05:45-06:30 the sky turns red over the Batur caldera and Mount Abang, with Mount Agung in the distance on clear mornings.
- 06:45 breakfast at the local stalls on site: hot drinks, seafood rice, instant noodles.
- 07:30 drive five to ten minutes to Pura Puncak Penulisan. Bring a sarong and sash.
- 09:00 continue to Pura Dalem Balingkang on the same road, then head back and reach Ubud around midday.
From Lovina, allow about two hours via Kubutambahan towards Penulisan and leave at 03:30. Staying in Kintamani cuts the drive to 20-30 minutes from Penelokan; an AccessiaPass hotel voucher can help you find a room around Kintamani or Ubud before the trip.
What it costs
According to Barometer Bali on 4 November 2025, entry is Rp15,000 per person and the caretaker, I Ketut Ardana, says the site is open 24 hours. Bobobox lists Rp40,000, so bring extra cash and treat the price as something to confirm at the gate. Tent hire is Rp60,000-80,000 for two to six people, but there are only six tents. Glamping starts at Rp250,000 a night, and overnight guests are advised to arrive the day before.
Before you go
- Mornings in Sukawana are cold and windy. Bring a warm jacket and light gloves.
- From November to March fog often fills the caldera. You may see no sunrise at all, and the ticket is still charged.
- The deck is bamboo on sloping ground. It is not suitable for wheelchair users and awkward with toddlers.
- Weekends and long holidays are busier. Choose a weekday for a quieter morning.
- Want a comparison? Pinggan sunrise point sits on the same side of the caldera and is better known, while Sukawana is closer to the two temples above.
Location and contact
- Address: Jl. Pura Penulisan-Balingkang, Banjar Paketan, Sukawana, Kintamani, Bangli. View on Google Maps

- Prices and hours: checked in October 2026 against the written sources above; confirm on site.
One practical tip: carry small cash notes for the ticket and the stalls, plus a torch or headlamp. You arrive in the dark and still have to walk from the parking area to the deck.
