Pura Batu Medau, Nusa Penida: An Ancient Seaside Temple on Suana’s East Coast

On Nusa Penida’s east coast, along the shore road between Suana and the hamlet of Semaya, stands Pura Kahyangan Jagat Batu Medau (also spelled Batu Medawu or Medahu). Its Pura Segara sits right on the wave-washed shoreline, and the temple grounds look out over the Lombok Strait. Local priests believe it is thousands of years old; together with Pura Dalem Ped and Pura Puncak Mundi it forms Nusa Penida’s Tri Purusa.

The Legend of the Boat That Split the Rock

The name “Medau” comes from perahu medah batu, “the boat that split the rock”. According to the Babad Nusa Penida chronicle, I Renggan, grandson of Dukuh Jumpungan, sailed a magical boat to conquer Bali, but Ida Bhatara Tolangkir of Mount Agung lulled him to sleep. Back on Nusa Penida’s east coast, the boat ran out of control and split the shoreline rocks. Inside the complex today are a boat-shaped stone and a highly sacred lingga-yoni statue.

Prayer Sequence & Meaning

  • Three prayer stages: start at Pura Segara by the sea, continue to Pura Taman (Beji), and finish in the inner sanctum (jeroan) of Pura Batu Medau.
  • Meaning: devotees come here to ask for wisdom and prosperity, while Dalem Ped is known for taksu (charisma) and authority—the two are seen as complementary.
  • Pilgrimage route: many tirta yatra groups combine it with Goa Giri Putri (about 3.5 km away) and Pura Dalem Ped in a single day.
  • Pujawali (temple anniversary): every 210 days on Buda Kliwon Pahang; the next one is estimated for 17 February 2027, when crowds of worshippers arrive.

Etiquette for Visitors

  • A sarong (kamen) and a sash around the waist are required; bring your own, as rentals are not always available.
  • Menstruating women and people in mourning (cuntaka) should not enter the temple grounds.
  • Do not climb shrines or temple walls, and give space to people who are praying.
  • There is no entrance ticket; leave a voluntary donation (punia).

Getting There & Best Time

From Sampalan or Buyuk harbour it is about 10–11 km (±25 minutes); from Toyapakeh about 18–19 km (±40 minutes): follow the coastal road to Suana, then stay on the shore road towards Semaya. The road is mostly paved but narrow and winding, so a scooter or a car with a local driver is most practical. Mornings are best, around 07:00–10:00: the sun rises over the sea, the heat is still mild and the temple is quiet.
