Pulukan Beach, Jembrana: How to Get There and the Wave Next to Medewi

Pulukan Beach is in Pulukan village, Pekutatan district, Jembrana, right next to Medewi Beach and separated from it only by a river mouth. From Denpasar or Canggu it's about 65-75 km, usually 2-2.5 hours along the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road. The beach is long, with dark sand mixed with cobblestones, and surfers know it as a rivermouth break with an A-frame peak and a right-hander.

Routes from Denpasar, Canggu or Gilimanuk

  • From Denpasar or Canggu: head to Tabanan, then follow the Denpasar-Gilimanuk main road west through Antosari and Pekutatan. It's a two-lane road busy with trucks, so allow 2-2.5 hours, longer on Friday afternoons and holiday periods.
  • Final turn: in Pulukan village, near the Medewi area, turn toward the sea on Jalan Loji (Jl. Loji II). The road ends almost directly in front of the main peak, where scooters and cars park.
  • From Negara: about 25 km east, 30-40 minutes.
  • From Gilimanuk: about 57 km, 1-1.5 hours. A good first stop if you're arriving from Java.
  • Without your own transport: ride-hailing cars are scarce in Pekutatan for the trip back. Hire a car with driver for the day, or stay around Medewi.

What you'll find there

The rivermouth wave has two peaks breaking left and right over sand, rock and cobblestone. According to local surf guides it works on all tides but is best at low tide, especially in the dry season from April to October with south to south-west swell. When the Medewi point drains out at low tide, many surfers move here. Crowds are moderate and thinner than at Medewi. Late in the day, the shoreline is a good spot to watch the sunset.

The beach is also the shared melasti site of three customary villages, Pulukan, Medewi and Manggissari, complete with a padmasana shrine consecrated on 25 January 2024. Don't sit or lay boards out in that sacred area, and make way if a ceremony is under way.

Downsides to know

  • It's not a beach for casual swimming: there are submerged rocks, rivermouth currents and murky water after rain.
  • Facilities are minimal. There are only a few basic homestays; warungs, board rental and surf lessons are in Medewi, a few hundred metres away.
  • Too far for a day trip from south Bali unless you're ready for 4-5 hours on the road.
  • As of September 2026 we could find no information on an official ticket booth; bring small change for parking.

Location and planning

If you only have one night, stay in Medewi and walk over to Pulukan at low tide in the morning.
