Nyanyad Beach, Nusa Penida: Read This Before You Head Down

Nyanyad Beach is free: no entry ticket and no parking fee, according to theworldtravelguy.com's guide, last updated in January 2026. This white-sand cove sits in the southern corner of Nusa Penida, within Sekartaji village (Banjar Sedihing on OpenStreetMap), roughly an hour's drive from the harbours and hotels in the north of the island. These are the things people most often get wrong or miss.

Before you go

  • Google Maps labels it "Sunfish Beach". Search for that. If you get lost, ask locals for "Pantai Nyanyad".
  • Don't follow the route to the Tanjung Sedihing lighthouse. The correct road is a little further west and fairly new, so it may not show on maps.
  • The road is rough. Cars have only been able to reach it since 2025. On a scooter, go slowly; some stretches are dangerous at speed. Ride-hailing apps don't operate on Nusa Penida, so rent a scooter or a car with driver.
  • The walk down takes about 15 minutes on concrete stairs. Shorter and easier than the trail to Suwehan Beach, but a few steep sections have no railing. Not a good fit for toddlers, older visitors with bad knees, or wheelchairs.
  • Monkeys live along the forest path. Keep food and sunglasses in a closed bag.
  • No warung or toilets are recorded. Bring water, snacks and your own rubbish bag.
  • There is a small temple, Pura Kayan. Don't enter the temple area in swimwear and don't climb the structures for photos.
  • No source describes the currents. The beach faces the Indian Ocean and has no lifeguard. If the swell is big, just wade at the edge.
  • A free beach doesn't mean a free island. The Nusa Penida entry levy still applies to tourists.

Why it's still worth it

The beach is wide, the sand is white, there are plenty of shade trees, and limestone hills close it in on every side, so there is only one way in and out. Because access opened so recently, you will probably share it with very few people, unlike Kelingking, Broken Beach or Diamond Beach, which 2026 guides describe as noticeably busier.

Route and practical info

  • Location: See "Sunfish Beach" on Google Maps
  • Entry and parking: free as of January 2026 (latest available source, checked October 2026)
  • Travel time: about 1 hour from the northern harbours, then a 15-minute walk down
  • Booking: not needed; arrange transport through your hotel or a scooter rental
  • Instagram: search on Instagram

An hour each way means a round trip from Toyapakeh or Sampalan takes half a day. If you want to arrive while the morning is still cool, staying a night on Penida makes more sense than a day trip from Sanur; our guide to choosing where to stay helps you weigh it up, and you can check AccessiaPass hotel vouchers for that night.

Plan to climb back up by 4pm at the latest: unrailed steps and a rough road are far riskier once the light starts to fade.
