Nunggalan Beach, Uluwatu: A Steep Cliff Trek to a Shipwreck

Between Nyang Nyang and the Pecatu cliffs lies a white sand cove that rarely makes a day itinerary: Nunggalan Beach. The draw is not a cafe but a rotting wooden shipwreck at the far end of the sand. Unlike the now well-developed Padang Padang or Suluban, Nunggalan can only be reached down a steep cliff trail — which is exactly why it stays quiet.

The Shipwreck at the Far End

  • From where the trail meets the sand, the wreck is about a five-minute walk to the right.
  • It is easiest to reach at low tide; at high tide part of the hull is submerged and the rocks turn slippery.
  • The timber and metal plating are brittle and rusted — photograph it from outside, do not climb on it.

The Cliff Trek

  • Allow 20–30 minutes down and 30–45 minutes up; the climb is almost continuous with no flat stretches.
  • The path mixes dirt, roots and uneven stone steps with sections of loose gravel. Wear shoes with grip — flip-flops are treacherous after rain.
  • Phone signal often drops below the cliff; save an offline map and tell someone your plan.

Surf, Currents & Best Time

  • Big waves, a rocky bottom, unpredictable depth and no lifeguards. This is not a beach for a casual swim — stay in the shallows at the edge.
  • Come around 08.00–10.00 so you are not climbing back in full sun; if you go late, be back on top before dark.
  • Check the tide chart: the sand is far more open at low tide.

Info Praktis & Akses

  • Location: View on Google Maps — Jalan Batu Nunggalan, Pecatu, Kuta Selatan.
  • Access: from Jalan Raya Uluwatu turn towards Pecatu, follow the small road to the villas and clifftop camping ground, then walk to the trailhead. Same direction as Nyang Nyang.
  • Parking & tickets: no official booth; park in the yard beside a villa or warung and pay a small, essentially voluntary fee of around IDR 5,000–10,000.
  • Facilities: almost none — toilets and warung are not always open, and no ojek waits below. Bring at least one litre of water per person.
  • Bring: a hat, sunscreen, a torch if you descend late, and a rubbish bag; carry everything out with you.
  • Social: search on Instagram to check recent trail conditions.
