Bedugul is Bali's refrigerator: a highland area in Baturiti, Tabanan, roughly 1,200–1,500 m above sea level with daytime temperatures of 18–24°C. At the peak of the dry season, pre-dawn temperatures can drop to 10–11°C — a chill you will never feel in Kuta. This guide covers the routes, a one-day order of visits, the ticket price for each site, and where to stay around Lake Beratan.
Routes & driving times to Bedugul
- From Kuta/Seminyak: about 60–70 km, ±2 hours via Mengwi–Baturiti. Leave before 07.00 to avoid Denpasar traffic.
- From Ubud: ±1 hour 40 minutes via Payangan or Tabanan; the road twists and narrows in places.
- From Singaraja/Lovina: only ±1–1.5 hours climbing via Gitgit — Bedugul is a common stop on the way back from North Bali.
- A car with a driver (around Rp600–800k per day) makes more sense than a scooter: afternoon rain and fog arrive without warning.
The must-see places & their entrance fees
- Ulun Danu Beratan Temple — open 07.00–19.00. Tickets: Indonesian adults Rp50k, children Rp25k; foreign visitors Rp100k adults and Rp75k children. Parking Rp3–5k. Arrive between 07.00 and 08.30 while the lake is still misty and the grounds are empty. Maps
- Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali) — open 08.00–17.00. Tickets around Rp15,500 on weekdays and Rp25,500 on weekends or public holidays, plus a vehicle ticket of Rp10k for motorbikes and Rp30k for cars. The grounds are huge — rent a bicycle if you would rather not walk it all. Maps
- Bali Treetop Adventure Park — inside the Botanic Garden, open 08.30–18.00. Tickets around Rp330–500k for adults and Rp200–375k for children, covering 7 circuits of flying foxes, rope bridges, and spider nets. Maps
- Handara Gate — open 06.00–19.00. Entrance is around Rp20–30k, and the photo fee at the gate is roughly Rp30–50k per person for a few minutes. The queue is longest between 09.00 and 11.00. Maps
- Candikuning Market — a fruit, vegetable, and flower market; open morning to late afternoon, free entry. Strawberries, passion fruit, and hydrangeas are cheap here — haggling is normal.
- Strawberry Stop — a cafe and strawberry farm on the Denpasar–Singaraja road; pancakes or strawberry juice run about Rp30–60k, with fruit picking charged separately.
Lake Buyan, Lake Tamblingan & the Wanagiri ridge
- Wanagiri Hidden Hills — a row of photo spots (swings, bird nests, tree houses) on the ridge overlooking the twin lakes. Open roughly 07.00–17.00; entry around Rp10–50k, with some photo spots charged separately per spot.
- Lake Buyan — the largest of the area's lakes at around 490 hectares, good for camping and lakeside trekking; a small fee of about Rp10–20k plus parking.
- Lake Tamblingan — the quietest and most sacred of the three. Hire a traditional pedahu canoe to glide along the forest edge; the rate is negotiated on site. Maps
- The Wanagiri ridge road continues to Munduk and its waterfalls — allow at least 2 extra hours if you plan to carry on.
Weather, best time to go & what to bring
- Mornings are usually clear, afternoons often rain. Finish every outdoor stop before 14.00.
- Bring a light jacket or hoodie, a packable rain shell, and non-slip shoes — the garden paths and lake shores get slippery.
- Driest months: June–September. January–February are the wettest and the foggiest.
- Carry small cash for parking, toilets (Rp2–5k), and the market. Signal is fine in Candikuning but weakens around Tamblingan.
An efficient one-day order of visits
- 07.00 Ulun Danu Beratan Temple → 09.00 Candikuning Market → 09.45 Bali Botanic Garden (add Bali Treetop if you have kids) → 12.30 lunch in Candikuning → 13.30 Handara Gate → 14.30 Wanagiri Hidden Hills → 16.00 Lake Tamblingan or descend to Munduk.
- With only half a day: Ulun Danu Beratan, Handara Gate, and Wanagiri already represent the area well.
Where to sleep: Bedugul, Baturiti, or Munduk?
- Bedugul/Candikuning — closest to the lake and the market; hotel choice is limited but it is the most practical base for a sunrise temple visit.
- Baturiti — more family villas with valley views, friendlier prices, 15–25 minutes from the lake.
- Munduk — the coolest and greenest, the best base for waterfall hunting; 45–60 minutes from Beratan.
- One night up here removes almost 4 hours of round-trip driving from South Bali.
If you plan to stay a night or two in these highlands, compare hotel voucher prices on AccessiaPass before locking in your dates — you buy the stay voucher first and redeem it when you are ready to book, so your rate does not climb when Bedugul fills up on weekends and long holidays. Check several partner hotels at once, compare them with the nightly rates you see today, and reserve your voucher at least two to three weeks ahead, because valley-view rooms sell out first. One quick comparison today can cut your room costs for the whole trip.
