Nyoman Gunarsa Museum, Klungkung: Bali's Classical Art Trove Without the Crowds

In Takmung village, Banjarangkan, a three-storey building holds one of Indonesia's largest privately owned collections of classical painting. The Bali Classical Painting Museum "Nyoman Gunarsa" was founded by the maestro in 1990 and formally opened in 1994. It sits just 3 km west of Semarapura, on the road toward East Bali and the Kusamba crossing to Nusa Penida — yet almost no tour bus stops here.

What You Will See

Two floors hold the permanent collection, one is for temporary exhibitions. The holdings go far beyond paintings.

  • Classical Kamasan style paintings on cloth — langse, ider-ider, parba — narrating epics and wayang stories.
  • Hundreds of expressive works by Nyoman Gunarsa (1944–2017) himself: dancers, masks and explosive brushwork.
  • Antique artefacts: keris daggers, masks, wooden statues, gamelan instruments and gold-eyed wayang puppets from the Gelgel court.
  • The building itself: old Balinese bale pavilions, pillars and carved doors that Gunarsa rescued from demolished traditional houses.

Current Status: Confirm First

The museum went dormant after Gunarsa died on 10 September 2017. Since September 2024 his family, with Yayasan Indonesiana, has revived it through an exhibition of the maestro's finest works. As it is still family-run, hours can change — check the Google Maps listing or ask your hotel to call a day ahead.
